UNITY
THROUGH DIVERSITY FESTIVAL
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2002
August
9, 2002
For Immediate
Release:
Connect LA
is facilitating a Los Angeles City and Countywide festival on Saturday,
September 14, 2002 at various locations.
The festival
is dedicated to the memory of the victims of 911 and is about children
youth and families coming together in their neighborhoods to commemorate
this terrible tragedy, to strengthen neighborhoods and engage local residents,
to develop and promote cultural awareness through literature and arts
projects and community services activities, to create volunteer resources
for the local community and to serve as a collaborative model for community
service projects.
The understanding
gained through reading and arts and service projects will result in change
in relating to neighbors of diverse cultures. Through participation in
these projects with real-life artists, technicians and service providers,
children, youth and families will become stewards of their neighborhoods.
The locations
of the 40 festivals and the projects are attached. Times of the events
vary. Activities planned include murals, storytelling, tile painting,
art and photography exhibitions, making of miniature American pins, folkloric
dancers, bike rides, picnics, tree plantings, candlelight vigils, skateboard
exhibitions, reading to children, a prayer breakfast, creation of a memorial
quilt, posters, essays, discussions and panel discussions.
